Who is Tai Sui? In the Chinese mythology, Tai Sui (太岁)) or the Grand Duke Jupiter is actually a position in the celestial heavens which is in charge of the world's affairs for a particular year and determine
the annual fortunes of all of us.
The Taoist calendar is organized in such a way of 12 "earthly branches" which rotate according to the five elements, resulting in a 60 year cycle.
Hence, there are altogether 60 heavenly generals who would rotate to take up this almighty position.
In 2012, General Peng Tai (彭泰大将军) takes over the helm from General Fan Ning who ruled over the year of 2011.

In term of house:
For 2012, Grand Duke sits on Chen mountain or the South East (SE1).
If your house faces SE1, it is considered “clashing Grand Duke”.
The residents may face accidents, obstacles or losing wealth. The cure is minimizing movements in the facing and put a Grand Duke talisman (see samples here) facing SE1.
On the other hand, if your house sits on Chen mountain, it is considered having the support of Grand Duke.
The tenants will do better in business ventures and winner in competition.
Historically speaking, countries at war with Grand Duke at their back are likely to win.
But if your house or office does not sit on Chen mountain, you may use a Grand Duke Talisman at your back side of your home as support (not recommended for people clashing Ta Sui for the current year).
In term of individuals:
In term of individuals, people who have something to do with current year’s Grand Duke are generally considered “violating Grand Duke“. This “violation” can be distinguished in 3 ways:
1. Direct Affliction (Sitting) 犯 太岁
People who have the same animal sign as the Grand Duke are considered “zhi 植” 'on duty' with Grand Duke.
For 2012 , people who were born in Dragon years are “on duty” with Grand Duke. The symptoms will be minor sickness, emotionally imbalanced and minor misfortunes.
2. Direct Conflict (Facing) 沖太岁
People whose animal sign clashes the Grand Duke are “chong tai sui”.
For 2012, people who were born in Dog years are clashing Grand Duke for the year. This is violation that may cause the following changes (it can be good or bad):
- career changes (promotion or demotion)
- shifting to another house or office
- marry
- more frequent travels
- major monetary losses or bankruptcy
- death in the family
- major sickness/ surgery
- accident or death
A much more serious situation is when our year pillar (stem and branch; branch is our zodiac animal sign) clash with the year pilar. This is called Pillar Clash 天剋地冲.
Take an example. He was born on 27 August 2006. His chart with his year pillar clashes with 2012 year pillar. His animal sign is Dog.
The degree of seriousness will depend of the overall performance of his Bazi Four Pillars of Destiny.
Chart 1. Pillar Clash 天剋地冲. Water clashes with Fire and Dragon battling with Dog.
3. “Penalizes" 刑太岁
People who have animal sign that “penalizes” Grand Duke. For 2012, people who have Dragon animal sign penalize Grand Duke. As the Dragon already Direct Afflicting 犯 太岁 and penalizing is less severe.
This is diffirent from year 2011 as in 2011 zi-mao penalty is one of the infamous “Three Penalties”in Bazi or 4-Pillars of Destiny. This becomes more a Bazi problem than Grand Duke violation. Zi-mao penalty normally jinxes the close relatives of the person involved.
The basic rules to remember are:
1. DO NOT sit facing or sleep with your head pointing to the direction of Tai Sui.
2 AVOID construction work including repair work, in the Tai Sui location. If this sector is disturbed, those staying in the house will have a tough year ahead with a lot of arguments and sicknesses. If there is no choice but a serious need to work in this area, then avoid starting and ending in here. One can start in other sectors.
3. One way to cure Grand Duke violation is to carry the Grand Duke talisman 太岁符 shown here. However, a mere reproduction of this talisman does not have the divine energy to fix the problem. A talisman needs to be “activated” or “benedicted” by a Daoist teacher or priest to be effective. You can get these sacred talisman from temples.
Sui Po (岁破) the Year Breaker
Sui Po year breaker occupies the 15 degree mountain directly opposite Tai Sui Grand Duke, which for 2012 is northwest (NW1 292.5 – 307.5).
You should treat this area with the same respect as the other annual afflictions with no groundbreaking work, renovations or any noisy activities.
If this area being disturbed it can normally cause immediate bad luck and health problems especially for the elderly. so please be very careful.
If you have to carry out work or emergency repairs ideally you should contact a professional consultant to select a favourable date to start the work.
