In 2015, "Servant of the People" is both the name of a popular Ukrainian TV series and the political party that launched Volodymyr Zelenskyy—now President of Ukraine—into the political spotlight.
In "Servant of the People" (2015–2019 Zelenskyy plays Vasyl Petrovych Holoborodko, a humble high school history teacher who unexpectedly becomes president after a viral video of him ranting against corruption gains public support. The impact was great it resonated with a frustrated population seeking change. The plot was about how Vasyl is caught on video delivering a passionate rant about government corruption and greed. The video goes viral, and ordinary citizens crowdfund his candidacy. To his surprise—and horror—he wins the presidency. As president, he tries to fight corruption and run the country honestly, clashing with entrenched elites and bureaucratic absurdity. This TV show was hugely popular in Ukraine and internationally (available with subtitles on platforms like Netflix for a time). It created a powerful emotional connection between Zelenskyy and the public. Political Party with the same name “Servant of the People” founded March 2018 named after the TV show. Zelenskyy was the party’s presidential candidate in the 2019 election. Election Victory with first round of Zelenskyy led with 30% and in the runoff defeated incumbent Petro Poroshenko with 73% of the vote. Zelenskyy key policies include peace efforts with Russia (pre-2022) initially aimed to negotiate peace over Donbas. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in Feb 2022, he has become an international symbol of resistance and leadership The transition from a fictional president on TV to the actual President of Ukraine is a rare, almost surreal political phenomenon, illustrating the powerful intersection of media and politics.
