What is the purpose of placing a vase in the living room that contained 1/2 salt water and 3/4 water in it?

Ancient Chinese do not have the luxury of windchime, electronic music box etc. So they use

salt + copper coins + water

leave the lid open but in a well ventilated place.
 
this is to cure star #5.

In your example? without the coins? mmm... most likely still can help to prevent some "disease". Mosquitoes might hates salt.
